ACCAN recently responded to the Department of Home Affairs’ 2023-2030 Australian Cyber Security Strategy: Legislative Reforms Consultation Paper (the Consultation Paper).

ACCAN supports the legislative reforms introduced by the Consultation Paper to address the gaps in the current regulatory framework. These reforms include:

  • Mandating a security standard for consumer grade Internet of Things technology.
  • Creating a no-fault, no-liability ransomware reporting obligation.
  • Creating a “limited use” obligation to clarify how the Australian Signals Directorate and the Cyber Coordinator use information voluntarily disclosed during a cyber incident.
  • Establishing a Cyber Incident Review Board.
  • The proposed changes to the Security of Critical Infrastructure Act 2018.
