ACCAN wrote a submission in response to the draft Reducing Scam Calls Industry Code, released for comment by the Communications Alliance. ACCAN welcomed the draft Code as an acknowledgement of the important role the telecommunications industry can play in the control of scam calls which pose a risk to consumers.

However, there are elements of the Code that ACCAN would like to see revised to provide better protections for consumers which are:

  • Strengthening the regulation and oversight of scam calls by an independent regulatory body;
  • A more proactive approach to consumer education about scams and the remedies available to consumers;
  • More specific timelines for industry to respond to scams; and
  • Broader reaching objectives specified in the Code, explicitly stating the overarching goal of reducing scam calls activity.
