5G mobile broadband services are expected to deliver many benefits and increased capacity services for consumers. The ACMA is examining the use of a spectrum band (3.6GHz) for this use in the near future.
There are substantial benefits to using the 3.6GHz band for 5G services. However, the 3.6GHz spectrum is currently supporting vital wireless broadband services in regional and remote areas. The availability of broadband services in regional and remote areas is important and we fear that the ACMA’s proposal may negatively impact the ongoing delivery of some of these vital services.
ACCAN believes that spectrum should continue to support the provision of services to all consumers and support a variety of providers to deliver innovative solutions to consumers. For this reason, our submission asks for further consideration by the ACMA of the potential harm that may result from reduced competition and service availability in these areas.
