This event honours Sue Salthouse and celebrates Sue’s unfailing commitment to Disability advocacy and Human Rights. The online event will take place from 4:00 pm on Thursday 1st December 2022. Robin Wilkinson will be the keynote speaker for the event. Robin has an extensive background in disability and consumer telecommunications advocacy. Yesterday’s announcement of $36 million across two connectivity programs is a double win for farmers and people living in the bush, according to the National Farmers’ Federation (NFF). The Federal Budget included $30 million across three years for the On Farm Connectivity Program (OFCP) and $6 million for the next three years to expand the NFF-led Regional Tech Hub. The Turnbull government’s decision to ban Huawei equipment from Australian 5G networks has become part of the context behind Optus’ objections to the Telstra-TPG multi-operator carrier network (MOCN) deal. Optus' complaint is made in four recently published submissions to the ACCC’s ongoing inquiry into the deal, after the competition regulator last month sought input into what other options TPG might have, independent of Telstra. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has found the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) breached the privacy requirements in the ABC Code of Practice by broadcasting an identifiable person’s profile in a news report about dating app scams. The Newshour segment, which was broadcast in May 2021, included footage of a screen scrolling through a dating app showing the profile of a person, including an image of a face, age and first name. The Albanese Government will undertake an independent audit of mobile coverage to better identify black spots and guide investment priorities from 2023. The 2022-23 Federal Budget confirmed $20 million funding which delivers on a key component of the Better Connectivity for Regional and Rural Australia Plan. The 2021 Regional Telecommunications Review noted community concerns about mobile providers’ predictive coverage maps and suggested an audit could be helpful in validating them. Australia will chair a taskforce of like-minded countries set on tackling ransomware through greater intelligence sharing and coordination between law enforcement and cyber security agencies. The virtual taskforce, to be hosted by the Department of Home Affairs and its recently established Critical Technology Coordination Centre, is expected to “coordinate resilience, disruption and counter illicit finance activities” when it is convened early next year. Telstra services are back online after floods caused widespread outages left hundreds of customers without any mobile phone reception for more than five hours on Tuesday. Around 500 clients of the national telco reported losing mobile coverage in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Taking to Twitter to air their grievances, Telstra users near the border of NSW and Victoria said they had been without mobile service since 3am. [News.com.au]
