ACCAN responded to the Government’s 2023 Privacy Act consultation. The consultation report offered a number of proposals resulting from the 2022 Privacy Act Review consultation.

in general, ACCAN was pleased with the majority of the proposals in the report.

Many of the proposals positively reflect ACCAN’s position outlined in our earlier submissions to Privacy Act consultations.

If implemented many of the proposals will progress consumer protection against data-collection over-reach, increase data protection and provide consumers with mechanisms to lodge complaints and remedies for redress from harms incurred from poor data privacy and protection.

ACCAN was particularly pleased to see the inclusion of Proposal 11.3, a Right to Withdraw Consent. ACCAN expects that consumers should always have the choice to change permissions and providing a Right to Withdraw Consent will provide greater levels of consumer trust.
