ACCAN recently submitted to the Department of Communications and the Arts consultation on Copyright Modernisation. The modernisation of copyright has the potential to bring significant benefits to consumers and ACCAN supports reforms to ensure that consumers are appropriate protected and can have confidence when interacting with the copyrighted material.
In our submission, we reiterated our support for reforms including:
- the introduction of a broad and flexible fair use exception;
- an express legislative statement clarifying that exceptions in the Copyright Act 1968 (Cth) can’t be removed by contracted out of;
- clearer rights for consumers to engage in format shifting of material they have already paid for.
As part of its submission ACCAN has also expressed support for a framework for greater consumer access to works of unidentifiable ownership or ‘orphaned’ works.
