ACCAN members, stakeholders and any other interested parties are invited to register for the 2023 Communications Consumer Congress, to be held on September 12-13 at the Aerial UTS Function Centre in Sydney. Through the generous support of our Delegate Sponsors, TPG Telecom and NBN Co, ACCAN is able to provide a limited number of travel grants to assist rural, remote and interstate members to attend the ACCAN 2023 Consumer Congress. Unreliable services and higher access costs are the key targets of the First Nations Digital Inclusion Plan, a response to the recent Australian Digital Inclusion Index finding that a significant connectivity divide remains between First Nations and non-First Nations Australians. ACCAN has long advocated for equitable access to reliable and affordable telecommunications services and is pleased to see action on this front. [Australian Business Journal]

ACCAN is pleased to be involved in the National Anti-Scam Centre (NASC). ACCAN CEO Andrew Williams is working with other members of the Advisory Board and other stakeholders to address this most serious issue. The Advisory Board sits monthly and will support and inform the work of the NASC. [ACCC]

The National Anti-Scam Centre has its first target. The ACCC is this week warning consumers about a new text message scam targeting users of loyalty programs from Qantas, Telstra and Coles. Usual principles apply - don't click on text message links from unknown numbers, and only log in via trusted applications. [ACCC]

The ACMA has issued warnings to eight telcos over various breaches of the TCP Code. The breaches concern telcos failing to provide adequate warning before restricting, disconnecting, or suspending services. ACCAN welcomes the clear action taken by the ACMA, and considers that it has never been more important that our most vulnerable consumers are fully supported and protected. [ACMA]

The Federal Government has launched a review into how best to strengthen the independence of the ABC and SBS via changes to their funding and governance. All Australians are invited to have their say. Submissions close August 31. [DITRDCA]

A direct cable connection from Darwin to Jakarta and Singapore brings new opportunities – including hosting a new ‘digital hub’ - and much-improved connection in and around the Northern Territory capital, according to Minister for Communications Michelle Rowland. Analysts from Future Market Insights (FMI) expect the global market for telecommunications infrastructure to grow from US$100 billion this year to US$175 billion by 2023. The global 5G rollout, expansion of digital businesses (and continued digitisation of existing business) and the increasing volume of online payments are key drivers of growth. [Telco News]
