After a thorough assessment of NBN Co’s proposed variation to its Special Access Undertaking (SAU), and informed by constructive and extensive engagement with NBN Co, Retail Service Providers, consumer representatives and other stakeholders, the ACCC has released a draft decision to reject the proposed variation. A new report from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has shown the telecommunications industry continues to let down customers who are facing financial hardship. The Financial hardship in the telco sector report found that in the last 12 months almost 2.4 million Australians experienced difficulty paying or had concerns with their telco bills. Consumers expect clearer communications from their telco, they want more efficient customer service, they must have improved billing accuracy, and it is absolutely necessary to have better answers for vulnerable customers and customers dealing with financial pressures. [ACMA website]

Australia will be better prepared to respond to future natural disasters thanks to an upgrade to emergency warnings and alerts, as well as improved communication for first responders, that will be rolled out through Albanese Government’s upcoming Federal Budget. The Government is rolling out a new cell broadcast National Messaging System (NMS) which will use state-of-the-art technology to significantly enhance how the Commonwealth delivers emergency messages. Privacy regulators from across Australia have issued a joint statement to mark the start of Privacy Awareness Week 2023 (1 to 7 May). For Privacy Awareness Week, privacy authorities from around Australia are joining together to call for people, organisations and agencies to get ‘back to basics’ and ensure they have covered the privacy fundamentals. Based on a recent survey and their own research, Trend Micro has announced that the current cyber risk level has dropped from ‘elevated’ to ‘moderate’ and that five organisations in six expect a successful cyber attack in the coming year. The six-monthly Cyber Risk Index was compiled by the Ponemon Institute from interviews with 3729 global organisations. [itwire]

Nadia Mattiazzo remembers going to her regular café one day back in 2016 and trying to buy a cup of coffee. To her shock and dismay, she found there was no way she could pay for it. Mattiazzo, who is blind, said the café had installed a new eftpos machine overnight which had a touchscreen. [Nine news]
