Due to the passing of Her Majesty the Queen and the National Day of Mourning on September 22nd, ACCAN’s Annual General meeting has been postponed. It will now take place virtually on Thursday the 29th September from 4:00pm (AEST). We will have live captioning and Auslan interpreters available throughout this meeting. ACCAN recently submitted feedback to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) regarding an issues paper for its March 2023 Report on Social Media Services. The issues paper will inform the ACCC’s sixth interim report for the Digital Platform Services Inquiry. ACCAN’s submission urged the need for regulatory reform to ensure that Australian consumers continue to enjoy the benefits from social media platforms while reducing their harms. [ACCAN]

The ACCC hopes this year’s change of government will set the stage for a review of telecommunications industry regulation. Speaking to the Australian Communications Consumer Action Network (ACCAN) conference yesterday, ACCC deputy chair Delia Rickard said telecommunications regulation is out-of-date and needs to be overhauled. NBN Co has come under industry pressure to improve its minimum commitments to service quality and to be more transparent about its network performance. The company also revealed more details about proposed mechanisms to cap price rises in a forthcoming revision of the special access undertaking (SAU). A “fully digitalised” tax office remains eight years away, according to Tax commissioner Chris Jordan, who envisions a greater reliance on natural systems for sourcing real-time data. TPG Telecom's CEO Iñaki Berroeta said the carrier lacks the resources to become a national competitor in the mobile market in its own right, in the event it can’t cut a deal with either Telstra or Optus. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) published further submissions in its inquiry into the proposed Telstra-TPG network and spectrum-sharing deal late last week. [iTNews]
