An ACCC report examining general online retail marketplaces, such as Amazon Australia, Catch, eBay Australia and Kogan, has highlighted a range of concerns about how they operate as well as the significant benefits they provide to consumers and sellers. Concerns include the use of algorithms to decide how products are ranked and displayed (including some marketplaces giving preference to their own products), the collection and use of consumer data, inadequate dispute resolution processes and a need for more consumer protections. Telstra said the outage was largely due to vermin damage on fibre-optic cables. Residents are worried about how they will call emergency services if it happens again. The outage was on a long weekend when the town was hosting its first home football game in years. [ABC News]

Nokia, Optus, and Samsung Electronics Australia today announced that they have achieved world first. The three companies achieved a data session using 3 Components (3CC) Carrier Aggregation Technology over a 5G Standalone network in Australia, the first time this has been done using a commercial smartphone. The Victorian government has set aside just under $115m in this year’s budget to move services online, continuing a significant reform agenda driven by the pandemic. Budget documents handed down on Tuesday show $99.8m from the package will be used by Service Victoria to deliver “new channels for simple and fast interactions with government.” [iTNews]

Fortinet warns that 64% of Australian and New Zealand organisations agree that the cybersecurity skills shortage creates additional cyber risks for their organisation compared with 80 per cent globally. Fortinet says its report demonstrates multiple risks resulting from the cybersecurity skills gap along with the increasing costs of security breaches on organisations’ profits and reputation.
