ACCAN recently submitted to the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications’ Streaming Services Reporting and Investment Scheme Discussion Paper. The discussion paper requests comments on a potential scheme to ensure that streaming services, such as Netflix, Stan and Disney+, invest in original Australian productions and promote local content on their services. ACCAN made five recommendations, including the resourcing of an organisation to provide a representative consumer voice in media reform issues [ACCAN].

Telstra has refunded customers more than $1.73 million and paid a $506,160 infringement notice after it overcharged thousands of customers following investigations by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). In 2020, the ACMA directed Telstra to comply with billing accuracy obligations after an investigation found it had overcharged more than 10,000 customers almost $2.5 million over a 12-year period [ACMA].

Google has commenced the roll out of its new data safety section for Android users on the Play Store. The new section will require app developers to inform users on how they collect data, who has access to that data, and what data is collected. Further information available to users will include whether the developer has qualified their security practices against a global security standard, whether the app has committed to follow Google Play's Families Policy, and more granular details relating to an app's security practices such as whether users can ask for data to be deleted [ZDNet].
