The ACMA Communications Report 2010-11 was released today. This major piece of research provides a snapshot of the communications services available and the preferences of Australian consumers. Here’s some key statistics that may be of interest to ACCAN members:

- Use of VoIP at home increased by 31 per cent to reach 3.8 million Australians aged 14 years and over at June 2011.
- Mobile phone VoIP usage increased by 226 per cent from a small base to reach 274,000 users at June 2011.
- The number of mobile services in operation (voice and data) in Australia increased by 13 per cent to reach 29.28 million at June 2011. (stat includes mobile phones and mobile broadband devices).
- 12.7 million people (69 per cent) had access to a broadband internet service at home, compared to 11.8 million (66 per cent) at June 2010.
- The number of payphones in operation in Australia decreased by five per cent to 33,201.
- Call minutes to the National Relay Service (NRS) increased by 1.3 per cent to 3.20 million minutes.
- The numbers added to the Do Not Call Register (DNCR) increased by 26 per cent to reach 6.36 million. The number of complaints received about unsolicited telemarketing calls increased by 72 per cent to 16,036
- Total new complaints issues received by the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) increased by 36 per cent to 503,800.
- An estimated 2.7 million Australians aged 14 years and over did not have a fixed-line telephone at home, compared to 2.3 million at June 2010—an increase of 17 per cent. Sixty-one per cent of those living in a household without a fixed-line voice service are aged 18–34 years.
