Structural changes to the communications market were one of a package of reforms in the 1993 Hilmer Review, which substantially improved competition in the Australian market. This led to a proliferation of consumer choice from the government owned monopoly, Telecom, to the diverse array of competitors Australian consumers have access to today.

During this time the internet has been an essential enabler for consumers. From new employment opportunities to dramatic efficiency gains, consumers have reaped many benefits.

ACCAN's submission focuses on the consumer experience of competition in the communications sector. It highlights a number of persistent supply side constraints and points to the work that still needs to be done to enable consumers to make better decisions on the demand side.
