The Department of Social Services recently released a position paper and sought feedback from the community on the development of a new National Disability Strategy. ACCAN made a submission to this consultation. Our submission was endorsed by 25 organisations and ACCAN members.

In our submission we reflected on what can be learnt and improved on from the last National Disability Strategy (2010-2020). We also outlined the enabling role of digital communications technologies in supporting greater inclusion and participation of people with disability in Australian society. Given the essentiality of digital communications technologies and services ACCAN believes that accessible and affordable digital communications technologies and services must be incorporated into all of the new National Disability Strategy’s outcome areas.

ACCAN made a number of recommendations in our submission. Many of these recommendations related to information we were told by people with disability, Disabled Peoples Organisations, advocacy groups and disability service providers when developing our Ideal Accessible Communications Roadmap. If implemented, these recommendations would help promote and protect the human rights of people with disability in Australia and would support successes in each of the outcome areas identified by the new National Disability Strategy.
