ACCAN has made a submission to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) 2016 stakeholder consultation on "Access to the Internet for persons with disabilities and specific needs". Drawing from the ongoing work and research we undertake to promote full participation of people with disability in our increasingly connected society, we have made a number of specific recommendations on how access to the internet can be increased for people with disability.

There are a number of unnecessary barriers which make accessing the internet more difficult for many people with disability including; poorly designed websites, audio visual web content lacking the necessary access features to make the content accessible for people with sensory impairments, overly cluttered and complicated web design which makes navigation and information access for people with dexterity impairments and people with cognitive impairments.

ACCAN expects that the internet should be available and accessible for all Australians and we will continue to work towards dismantling these barriers.
