NBN Education Assistance Packages

To help Australians respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, NBN Co is providing up to $50 million to assist phone and internet providers to support low-income family households with school-aged children who do not currently have an active nbn connection at home.

This funding will help phone and internet providers create more affordable offers to connect eligible families during term two of school.

You can find a list of telcos offering NBN Education Assistance Packages below. Please note that this table is being updated as details are available.

These offers are available until 15 January 2021 for unconnected families only; families who connect under these plans may be offered an exclusive discounted plan for a further 12 months.

Online Learning and Access to Devices

COVID-19 containment measures have required many school students to learn from home. Access to suitable online equipment has emerged as a significant education barrier for students and families.

Device loan schemes are arrangements where a school temporarily loans a device to a student who requires one for the purpose of education. Most state and territory governments are implementing some form of device loan scheme, but public information available on how the scheme operates varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.

Where can I get help?

Parents seeking information and advice on loan devices should contact their child’s or children’s school for assistance. If you have questions about this information or don’t know how to get help, please contact ACCAN at This email address is being protected from spambots. What support is available in my state or territory?

There is variation in guidance from states and territories on how learning should be delivered in Term 2 2020 for several reasons, including differing infection rates and pre-COVID-19 school non-attendance rates. For example, the NT strongly encourages students to attend school, while VIC recommends that parents keep their children at home. Overall, most non-government schools appear to be replicating the learning arrangements of their state counterparts.

There is limited public messaging from non-government school peaks to encourage their members to implement a device loan scheme. In most cases it is up to the discretion of the individual non-government school to oversee how COVID-19 containment measures are managed, including whether learning is delivered predominantly online or face-to-face.

How accurate is this information?

This information has been collected from organisations’ website and media statements. State government and individual school arrangements are developing rapidly, and there is a high degree of information not publicly available, so aspects of this summary may not be current.
